(London) Sleeve Notes: The Diplock Courts In Northern Ireland Diplock Courts are administered by a single judge without a jury. Unlike in British courts, a "confession" made by the accused may be used by the prosecution even if it was obtained by physical violence or intimidation. Further, the verbal evidence of a policeman that the accused has made a "confession" is enough to secure a conviction. Amnesty International have stated that in the overwhelming number of contested cases, convictions are based wholly or mainly on admissions of guilt made to the police during interrogation. Only in a minority of cases is other evidence - forensic evidence, intelligence evidence or testimony of witnesses - produced in court to secure a conviction.
