Recorded on February 29, 1952 (#1), July 1, 1952 (#2 & 5), June 30, 1952 (#3), December 7, 1951 (#4), December 11, 1951 (#6 & 7), May 19, 1947 (#8), and December 24, 1947 (#8-13).

"The Liberian Suite" was recorded at Liederkranz Hall, New York City.
"Skin Deep" was recorded at the Rainbow Ballroom, Fresno, California.
All other selections were recorded at Columbia's 30th Street Studio, New York City.

This album was issued on three occasions, each time with slightly different content.
The original album (ML4639) contained tracks 1 through 5.
"Hi-Fi Ellington Uptown" (CL830) omitted "A Tone Parallel To Harlem" and put "The Controversial Suite" in its place.
The third version (CL848) dropped "Perdido" and added "The Liberian Suite."

For tracks 1, 2, 3, 5 "Billy Strayhorn or Duke Ellington" are credited as playing the piano.
