Albumet ble spilt inn på Grand Hotel i Montreux i Sveits i desember 1971, og foranledningen til innspillingen var en dramatisk brann i Montreaux Casino under en Frank Zappa-konsert. Omstendighetene rundt dette man kan man høre om på låta «Smoke on the Water», med et av rockens mest gjenkjennelige riff. |
